Why the foundation was founded
Thomas A. Pollard founded the W.M.S.B.C.F. after he saw firsthand the hardship that his family members endured during their bouts with cancer. He experienced the emotional hardship and pain of the passing of his mother to bone cancer and aunt Rose due to breast cancer. Tom's mother, Anne, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She battled it
for a little over a year before getting the surgery to remove the
cancer and was one of the few survivors of pancreatic cancer nearly
twenty-three years later. She was then diagnosed with bone cancer and
skin cancer and passed away Oct. of 2011 at the age of 86. Although she was not diagnosed specifically with breast cancer he knew that all cancer victims have the same hardships-mentally, physically and financially. Even if the person or family has more than adequate medical insurance the medical bills can be over bearing. That was when he discovered that many females that don't have insurance (nearly 50% of the females in the USA do not have health insurance) have few places to turn to for treatment or for help when things seem too much to deal with there breast cancer.
Tom volunteered his time and skills with a breast cancer charity for about a year, and in doing so, he discovered to his surprise that there were not any charities that existed that were able to help the victims directly- only indirectly by funding research. Tom further noticed that there were no breast cancer foundations involved in the motor sports industry. In October 2008 he founded the World Motor Sports Breast Cancer Foundation (W.M.S.BC.F.) with the knowledge that the motor sports industry and motor sports lovers are very generous and compassionate about helping others.
No matter who you are, in some way, cancer has had an effect on your life or the life of a loved one. Most people have been affected by cancer-either firsthand, or personally know someone whose friends and family have experienced some form of cancer.
